My hobby is cooking. I make a new dish every Saturday.

Last week I made Japanese food. I made sushi and miso soup, but it was difficult.

I have three recipe books. I also look up recipes on the internet.

One day I would like to go to Japan and attend a cooking class.

Japanese verbs fall into three groups. Understanding which group a verb belongs to tells you exactly how to conjugate it. Click any Japanese form to hear it.
Group 1 โ€” Godan verbs (ไบ”ๆฎตๅ‹•่ฉž)
End in any ใ†-sound syllable: ใยทใยทใ™ยทใคยทใฌยทใถยทใ‚€ยทใ‚‹ยทใ†. The final syllable changes across a row of the hiragana chart (the "five steps" โ€” hence ไบ”ๆฎต).
ใ†
Rule: Drop the final ใ†-row syllable and replace with the equivalent syllable from a different row.
e.g. ใ‹ยทใยทใยทใ‘ยทใ“ โ€” dictionary form ends in ใ, negative stem uses ใ‹, polite stem uses ใ, te-form uses ใ„+ใฆ

Example verbs (click to hear)

End in ใ„ใ‚‹ or ใˆใ‚‹. Conjugation is simple โ€” just drop ใ‚‹ and add the ending. One stem, one step โ€” hence ไธ€ๆฎต (one-level).
ใ‚‹
Rule: Drop the final ใ‚‹ and add the ending directly.

Group 3 โ€” Irregular verbs (ไธ่ฆๅ‰‡ๅ‹•่ฉž)
Only two irregular verbs in Japanese: ใ™ใ‚‹ (to do) and ใใ‚‹ (to come). These must be memorised โ€” they follow no pattern.
ใ™ใ‚‹ใƒปใใ‚‹
Note: ใ™ใ‚‹ and ใใ‚‹ are unique โ€” they change their stem entirely for certain forms. Compound verbs like ในใ‚“ใใ‚‡ใ†ใ™ใ‚‹ (to study) and ใงใ‚“ใ‚ใ™ใ‚‹ (to call) all follow ใ™ใ‚‹'s pattern.
